That's my favorite thing with a good writer, even more than the story -- the way they notice things and put it into words. It's often something I have noticed but couldn't verbalize, and I though it was just something *I alone* noticed! lol
I always love your newsletters, Alicia! This was a delightful tour recap, and I appreciated all the little details and legit guffawed at the coffee story. TY for including it :D
I was wondering if you, noted Dakota Johnson scholar, had seen Materialists! For the most part I liked it, but I too have lots of thoughts. I'm just glad that there is actually a romantic drama in theaters that people are excited about! More of this, Hollywood!
Ooh, I loved the entire newsletter, but the alt-country podcast thing in particular. I'm an old hippy who started marching in anti-Vietnam days, but I've been a bluegrass and country musician since the 70's, torn between loving the music and hating the politics, mostly of the fanbase. I've got tons to say about it; the Chicks vs Toby Keith is the tip of the ugly iceberg. So I'm super curious who the alt-country dude is. Because a part of the whole "alt" thing is that mainstream gnashville is less relevant and I expect more lefties. I guess if you didn't want to name names in the newsletter, then you won't reveal it here either lol!
One thing that's been pretty fascinating to me (if chilling) is the way that counter-culture sometimes turns . . . counter-culture in a very different way. Like some of the old punks are now libertarians, because no matter what, it feels like they just want to be anti- whatever they see as the status quo. idk it's weird but it's definitely a thing!
Rideshare stories are always amazing, such great little slices of life. I keep waiting for the day when someone profiles me and changes the music to what they think I'd like (I want to know!) but I guess I give off strong "keep listening to your music" vibes.
You are already aware of some of my *thoughts* on Materialists, but I am also thrilled that a rom-dram got a theatrical release and attracted some serious star power. (Also, everyone should watch Celine Song's Past Lives, an achingly beautiful movie.)
I continue to support anything that allows Dakota Johnson to be on a press tour. I have stopped counting how many of her appearances I've watched. I think my favorite is the Vogue.com interview with Pedro, but hard to top the appearance of her truly adorable dog Tokyo on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast.
I agree! Definitely one of those situations where I want all the support for the movie and want it to do well! Just also have thoughts. I have to watch the Amy Poehler podcast episode.
ayyy my two favorite things - books and nail polish!! Love the Mooncat shoutout! If you like glowy, sparkly polishes check out Polished For Days (not affiliated - I wish!). Read NBS last week and really really enjoyed it. Makes me wish I was musically inclined ha
First, I will never trust the $53 charger again 👏🏾👏🏾
Second, thank you for your work highlighting and universal trauma of lukewarm coffee... Like there's a whole Bible verse about it. 🤣🤣. Anyway, I love these little tidbits from your tour. It feels like letters from a friend in the '90s
They WANTED me to know how much they were overcharging. It was violent. And thank you for understanding that at the end of the day, my coffee travails were the thing I MOST wanted to talk about!
Your eye is so so good - never get tired of hearing you talk about the things you notice <3

that's the highest compliment I can imagine; thank you!
Thoughts on Friends to Lovers, you say?? I'd love to hear more on that!
Tune back in in like, idk, four more newsletters or so! It's a topic I want to get to!!

I agree! I would read a whole collection of them -- that's an idea for someone if they haven't done it yet.

I also have a lot of thoughts about The Materialists 👀
It feels like a movie to have Thoughts about which honestly, thank god! I love a movie you want to talk about!
Yes!! It made me think about so much!
