My husband is a big fan of The Offspring and wants to see them when they come through Branson this summer, a big get for our area. I never really got into them during my alternative era aside from listening to Americana a lot in college, but love a handful of their songs. We watched the very silly movie Idle Hands a few weeks ago and they have a delightful cameo as the band performing at the school Halloween dance.
I’m a little relieved I lost my old high school journals in a flood years ago. They MIGHT have been decent fodder for a YA novel but then again I wouldn’t have been able to read them without cringing into the sun.
And OFFSPRINGA and the KNOCK-OFFSPRING I’m screaming
I wasn’t sure I was going to have anything to say because I am of the weird variety where music didn’t shape me a lot as a person. I couldn’t name a singular artist or song as a kid. I can maybe name a handful now, but my taste is very weird. Though I now kinda want to listen to something this band did because you love it so much.
BUT. Cross-stitching. I actually do 3 and not 2 strands because I think it fills in better but also you’re right it’s so annoying. Like what was the point?? Does it take longer to create?? Why can’t they just sell it ready to use? So many questions. Anyway, splitting the string is my least favorite part
After my brother’s friend played Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) every time I was in the car with them, I vowed to hate The Offspring, and yet your post today may have me setting down my decades long hatred to give them a second chance. I’m not one who would say I like “obnoxious” music, but I’m pretty sure my parents would have called the screamo bands I loved as a pre-teen obnoxious.
Here’s some tv recs (depending on what vibe you’re going for):
Comedy: Abbott Elementary, Schitts Creek, Brooklyn-99, What We Do In The Shadows
Drama: The Bear, Anne with an E, Glow
Fantasy/Sci-Fi: Dark, Fallout, Arcane
Also highly recommend any of the miniseries made by Mike Flanagan, if you’re in the mood for horror and to cry lol
that grudge is very fair!!! but also I hope you set it aside because I do love this fucking band lol. Thanks for the show recs! I've seen some of those but there are several I've been meaning to get to so it's good to have the reminder.
I love that you incepted your husband into steaming about your special interest! Legit romantic.
Also, the Knock-Offspring is SUCH a good name, I would pay tens and twenties of dollars to stand all night in a general admission venue to watch your band play, even though I really only know the radio singles.
Ugh WHY are you the coolest human? Being a fan pre-Smash is not even a thing I knew a person could be. I have definitely shared that Offspring was my first show EVER (Conspiracy of One tour, and I was fully allowed to attend but the girl I went with/stayed at afterward was not so I have fond memories of Febrezing myself down on the streets of Manhattan before going back to her apartment), so obviously they will old hold a special place in my heart, but also I have simply never stopped loving them and I am still stunned in 2025 when "Come Out and Play" comes on my 90s playlist and is still such a tremendous banger. Also, the Knock-Offspring is brilliant.
LOVED your husband's my wife moment and the fact you called this hyperfixation an "Offspringa." lol forever. While listening to my kids' hyperfixation on "Sigma Boy" this week, a remix came on with twice the Russians singing on it, so I said, "They must have gotten wet at night." My husband's laugh confirmed that I'd chosen the right partner.
The Offspring are linked inextricably to my brother in my mind. I remember these songs so viscerally! Definitely some of the best of the 90s. I like a band with a sense of humor, too; they're not afraid to poke fun at themselves and be silly, yet they're still earnest too. <3

I love Idle Hands in very large part BECAUSE of that cameo lol

the flood saving you from yourself lol (and thank you for appreciating my word(comeoutand)play!)

That's very validating to know that more regular cross-stitchers find it annoying and it's not just me!

our set list would be 85% radio singles, we believe in giving the people what they want!

Offspring being your first show over is definite cred points! They just have so many good songs!!

hahaha I love those moments!
really enjoyed all the cameos from your husband in here
he's been on this journey with me; he deserves the shoutouts!

I also associate them very strongly with my brother!! And agree with you about liking a band with a sense of humor :)
