I love this as a 2024 goal! I was also never a confident bike rider...I had training wheels until second grade, when our class took a bike ride field trip and I had to SPEED-LEARN how to ride without training wheels so I wouldn't be embarrassed!!! I think riding a bike for errands sounds like such a dream!
holy shit that is a high-pressure situation to learn in!! We already biked up to get pizza for dinner as a family, and have biked to get coffee/groceries a few times. Look at me go!!!!
I learned how to ride a bike pretty early; it was essential to playing with the other kids in my neighborhood growing up. I still have a scar near my elbow from when I wiped out on a gravel driveway, which I remember being pretty painful. I did learn how to swim fairly late, not until around 12, and I've always regretted that. To this day I'm not fond of going to pools or water parks.
Glad you're enjoying Check & Mate; that one is my favorite so far of Ali Hazelwood's. I found the whole peek behind the curtain at the world of chess pretty fascinating, and Nolan is pretty adorable.
So funny how those things that are hangups for us in our youth can stretch on into adulthood, huh? I finished Check & Mate the other day and really enjoyed it!! Nolan IS adorable!
I also learned to ride a bike late! And then I was really into it for a while (including riding without using the handlebars!) and then I stopped when I was an adult. I even got a bike a few years back, but I couldn't get into it because all I could think about was all the cars around me and how easily I could die. 😬 Good for you for getting back on the proverbial horse!
(I don't know what to do about Substack. There really isn't anything that has the same stuff!! Why do we have to leave and not the Nazis?! If your website uses WordPress you could probably approximate most of the features with a blog and a newsletter, but not as effortlessly.)
I still definitely don't feel up to riding on a busy road! I see people doing it and I'm like, no thank you, will stick to quiet neighborhood streets and bike trails for now! I don't use Wordpress right now, but that's probably a good idea . . . then you're not beholden to any platform.

Audrey Watters has a couple of suggestions in this post, as she leaves Substack...
