This was SO '90s romance - the drama, the arguments, the stony silences that told you it was Love. I ADORE your entire one-sided argument with this book :D
I'm extremely guilty at reading book plots on wiki instead of the whole thing (mainly when I'm only semi-interested but extremely nosy) and this scratched that itch so well!! This was so entertaining and now I'm wondering if I should grab some harlequin books from my grandma's bookshelf 😂 But not sure I could make it through the casual misogyny 🤢
Anyways, thanks for this! I always get so happy to see a notification for your newsletter!!
I used to love reading Television Without Pity recaps of TV shows I didn't even watch, so I get it!! The casual misogyny can definitely be a lot -- I'll be honest, I don't know how much patience I would have for some of these older books if they weren't nostalgic for me. But because they're SO nostalgic, I can't help but love them even when I can see the problems.
This was amazing, thank you for taking us on the journey! All my old mass markets are historicals, so I kept having to revise what I was imagining as more details came out. "A bus? oh, they probably had busses in the 20s. They definitely had cars." By the time I got to the computer I realized I'd made some significant mistakes 😂
Ummmmm I want to read this book right away now!! Thank you! It sounds like a steamy Sound of Music with less kids and less nazis - from the frog in the bed to the deluded other woman who thinks she’s marrying in, etc etc.
I too feel that the boss/employee love trope is just kinda ick - I saw a romance on the grocery store shelf called The Nanny and txtd it to my sister w the words “look, someone wrote a horror!” Because as a nanny who has been there, it ain’t as cute (did get a nice guilty-conscious bonus cash tho that I pocketed without too much trouble because ok, that’s on you dude).
Also, rereading old books can be so cringe! I’m reading Narnia to my kids and the outright sexism and racism and pro-colonization vibes are just so appalling! Cheers for change, but yikes!
Thank you for this entertainment!! Perfect for upcoming valentines.
omg you're right! I hadn't really connected it to The Sound of Music before. It's weird how I can suspend some disbelief re workplace boundaries etc. for the right book -- like some authors just do a good job of Taking Me There and even if I intellectually know something isn't great, I'm still along for the ride. I don't want to have ALL boss/assistant romances closed off to me, you know? But it definitely takes a bit more for me to be okay with it. And oooof, yes, Narnia can be rough and you only realize it as you're reading it aloud to your kids lol.
I feel EXACTLY the same way about car scenes in books, especially how much they can reveal about the characters (I wrote more than one into TCATC because I’m obsessed.) I’m not sure Teenage Me (who had to sneak my mom’s Harlequins because I was def not allowed to read them) would understand Adult Me’s adoration of fictional men who drive well and have clean cars. I guess adulthood has a way of clarifying priorities. XD
OMG, I get treated to this hilarious and fascinating 1990s romance novel recap and then get to see Hannah Tate, Beyond Repair at the end?!?! Thank you so much for including it!!! <3 Also, next week is seriously stacked--I can't wait to read all of those, too!

Stony silences as a love language!! Yes!!!

hahaha yeah never do I reveal my own ignorance more than when I'm reading a historical and am like, wait . . . let me place this in context . . .

Oh it can be so hot and steamy for sure! If I love the book I don’t even know if I’d think of it being ick 😂

hahaha adult men who drive well and have clean cars don't even KNOW how ahead of the game that puts them!
