I had to pause at the Ben Folds joke to scroll and comment on how uncomfortably hard I laughed. This is also one of my favorite movies and you’re covering it perfectly.
this movie RUINS me and can I just shout out the screenwriter and everyone involved for never making lucy's unglamorous job an issue??? jack's family simply loves her for who she is!! top tier stuff!!!
totally agree!!! like it's not even implied at the end that she's going to apply for different jobs or anything like that, it's like, she has a job!!!! it pays her bills and she seems to like her coworkers!!!!
God this movie is SO GOOD. I've seen it so many times and still had to read every word of this recap (crying) and watch it play out in my head, lol.
ALSO fun fact about the ending line: we watched it in Italian once and the title is changed to "un amore tutto suo" -- a love all his own -- and they change the last line too and when we got to that part I'm pretty sure my whole family just SCREAMED. It was about as good as that throwaway scene in the beginning where the newspaper kid on a bike throws the newspaper too hard and wipes out. This movie. Is. Everything.
oh wow i love that little italian trivia! i do love that newspaper kid wipeout moment, even if i hate that the kid actually hurt himself doing it. it's just perfectly comedically timed!
ah but I LOVE your pencils because I never sharpen them and just keep them in a mug on my desk as a festive bouquet!!! which is the best way to enjoy pencils in my personal opinion ;) (I just like a bold ink and pencils are a little too washed out for me! that's really it. i admire their functionality!)
omg you are an incredible writer. I'm laughing, I'm crying, I'm... Gorbachev? lol I have always adored this movie and experiencing it though your eyes is a great gift. A Xmas miracle :-)
Have a terrific holiday season, except I'm right there with you about NYEve being a horrible night. I've had some lulus over the years.
First of all, I absolutely cackled at "damn, I was going for thoughtful." Second of all, this movie (and Sandy) is a treasure and I don't watch it enough but thank you for doing it such justice!!
Also, I reiterate: your newsletter is my favorite!

oh NO i didn't know that the kid was actually hurt! but the movie's comedic timing is truly impeccable!
We stan a tearful confession delivery scene!

This movie is truly THE best. But also I'm tripped up on the "not liking pencils part...." ;-)
