Oh, wow. The ending to this really brought me to tears. I'm not published but I have been chasing publication for going on 10 years and I have been having so many conversations lately about seeking to find the joy (the miracle!!!) in writing and not just in publishing and this is exactly what I needed to read today. Thank you, Alicia. Your newsletter is always just the best!
What an amazing trip! So wild that you reconnected with someone from your AOL days! It's such a big coincidence. One of my online friends (from the Linkin Park message boards lol) married my college roommate's cousin so I still see him every so often
My kid was asking about my book, why am writing it, if I'm going to publish it, and I was like...I don't know, bud, it all sounds kind of awful? And it's your full time job! No wonder you feel burned out!
Highly recommend not jumping in an elevator, I did it with some friends in middle school, and it caused the elevator to stop. It was only stuck for a few minutes, but that definitely didn’t stop me from panicking lol. Yay to the Lakeland shout out!
Another fabulous newsletter. As an outsider, I can only imagine about the pub industry. I will say that I have been reading fiction a LONG time, and I remember the days when there was a jacket blurb or buzz that would cause me to choose my next book. And now with sm, it seems like authors have to do an unfair portion of pr in order to make a living. Back in the day, I don't remember them having to do any beyond the odd interview, in print or on Dick Cavett or whatever. The tone of your newsletters (all of your writing in fact) is so joyful. I'm smiling the whole time I'm reading, and sometimes LOL. So I do hope you enjoy writing them, is all I'm trying (poorly) to say <3
There really is such an increased demand for marketing, PR, social media, etc., it can get pretty exhausting! Dean R. Koontz circa 1991 would never!!! I do enjoy writing the newsletter, so thank you for reading!
I was teetering terribly close to burn out before election/vacation, and since then I've just -- slowed down and read books? And watched Wicked. Trying not to be bored with the miracles :)
I've been trying to read more books lately, too -- and read for pure pleasure, not for any job-related reason. It feels like the way to end out a year, you know?

it can be so hard to find that joy because it's a tough business!!! but we have to believe it's there or else we wouldn't do it, right?
