Okay, I love this. I’m also a heavy library user for ebooks and audiobooks and have used some of my local branch’s physical resources, but I didn’t know you could also read paywalled media publications! I would love to do more library events… a few years ago I did a little circuit of talks in libraries in Michigan and it was such a positive experience.
Hah, when I was at a conference last year I met a guy named David Gahan and I DID make the obvious joke…turns out they were distant cousins! (Unless this is just a story American Dave Gahan tells to people who make the obvious joke at him.)
Library during covid was a wild time! I’d be rolling up to my library where they had all of the holds available for pickup in individual plastic bags outside of the building with a stapled on printed out name label. That’s a memory I haven’t thought about in awhile. Libraries rule!
I also appreciate the convo re buying books and getting books at the library and letting your money speak. I’ve definitely disproportionately read books of diverse authors from the library instead of buying them. Once I realized I did that I’ve made a conscious effort to buy more equitably (especially for authors whose work I’ve read before and loved). The library is a great “try an author before you buy” resource for me
I also use the library as a "try before you buy" resource, or a "I do want to read this celebrity memoir but I don't need to OWN it" resource, that kind of thing!
This library worker really appreciated all of the love shared here for libraries! The Libby app is indeed a game changer; I listen to audiobooks through it all the time. Hoopla often comes through with more obscure movies that are hard to find elsewhere, too.
I have been actively avoiding taking my son to A Minecraft Movie because I have no interest in it, but your experience convinced me that it might actually be worth the time, at the very least for him.
A major selling point about the Minecraft movie FOR ME was also that it is only 1 hr 40 minutes long!! Which is still a long time for a movie you're not interested in, don't get me wrong, but SO many movies are at the two hour mark lately that I was relieved lol. Get me in and get me out! Promise of the Premise!
lol. You have my blessing to pick on JP. He's everything I loathe about the current pub industry, not so much his meh books but the way he gloms onto young talent and becomes a co-author, which they go along with to get published and promoted but which is BOGUS. It's exactly like the music industry where you pitch a good song to someone with industry clout, and they will help but only if they can be a "producers" and get a trumped up (pun intended) co-writer credit, which waters down the points. Oy, what we do to get some traction...

I always give you 5 stars (deservedly :-) on GoodReads, but I see I can't follow you. Is that what you mean when you say you're not on there? I know it's a portal for Amazon, which is the last ditch place I want to buy a book. I try to Libro.fm your audiobooks because we're constantly voting with our wallets, I know. Just trying to be ethical.
a green day title!! and library love!! so made for me! also totally want to read derrick's memoir now and lmfao at the things you knew about him before you started his memoir
I think you'd really enjoy his memoir honestly! like do I like him as a person . . . not really! do I like his band's music? maybe moderately more than I used to. But it's an interesting book to give some insight into what it's like to be in a touring band with all the ups and downs that comes with it
You know I love the library (recently availed ourselves of the free outgoing faxes!). I've also been going to the same branch most of my life, which is great for telling "when I was your age" stories to my kids.
We also saw the Minecraft movie this weekend! I didn't know going in that it was a Jared Hess film, so when I saw that during the opening credits I was like"ah, of COURSE!" I am only high-level familiar with the game, but it was still quite fun!
Some excellent services my library offers: you can check out American Girl dolls! You can check out tickets to the zoo or the aviary, or any of the local excellent museums! We love it!
Also, 'we talkin bout practice' was one of the first internet clips my now husband ever shared with me, so thank you for that EXCELLENT trip into nostalgia land.
I love my library so much! I check out tons of books and a lot of people there know me and support me as a person. It's such a safe and wonderful place that does more 💕 than just allow me to check out books (though I love the books!) I visit other libraries too. Some terrific people work at libraries. A resource for so many things ✨️ 😌
Very much only tangentially related but I cannot stop listening to holiday by Green Day right now
it's a great song!

A circuit of talks to a bunch of libraries sounds so cool! And either way, real David Gahan cousin or fake, that's a great story.
libraries are the third space we all dream of!!
truly!

Under two hours, that is a DEFINITE plus!

a "producer" watering down the cowriter credits is very much a part of Deryck Whibley's memoir!

Coming from one of the smartest, most thoughtful people I speak to about romance, this is the biggest compliment.
I love Bad Sisters. I'll watch anything Sharon Horgan writes, though. Have you seen Catastrophe?
Yes -- I loved it! I would also follow Sharon Horgan anywhere.

Free outgoing faxes! I do love that. Now I want to see if that's available at my library -- I bet it is.

American Girl dolls!!! That's incredible. I would've never guessed!

I could not agree more!
I'm on my 17th year of working at the library, it's the best! Thank you for the library love! And see you in St. Louis!!! 💜
Damn 17 years!! That's awesome! I'll see you there!
