Fabulous! As a fan of your newsletters, I had to watch the film, despite being so late to the party. I can't believe I missed it in 1994! I mean, I was in a country band at the time with my wife, and and we covered a bunch of those songs. I recognized a ton of the music and also cameos by musicians who are not famous to normal folks.

I'm here commenting on this old post because you linked to it in a new post and I have to say that I watched this movie SO MANY DAMN TIMES. River Phoenix was my first major, major crush. Like, I had photos of him plastered all over my bedroom walls when I was twelve. I bawled my seventeen year old eyes out when he died. I still miss him terribly. Anyway, I also wanted to ask how you ending up liking Cuckoo's Nest? Ken Kesey is a fantastic but difficult writer. If you want to delve deeper into his work, I highly, highly recommend Sometimes a Great Notion which I liked more than Cuckoo's Nest. It's a sprawling family saga, the Pacific Northwest is absolutely a character, the way New York City can be a character, and it's the book I always list when people ask what book made you cry?

oh I loved River Phoenix, too! He always had such a crackling energy to him. I liked Cuckoo's Nest well enough? "Fantastic but difficult" seems a good description for his writing. I'll check out the Sometimes a Great Notion book!
